Are you paying attention yet?!
Here I am writing about another mass shooter here in the Bastrop, TX area! Yesterday afternoon around 3:45pm a 25-year old young man starting shooting up cars in the Home Depot parking lot. That store is a 10-minute drive from where I sit. He then exited his vehicle and continued shooting at vehicles in the parking lot.
The police press release says the first responder to arrive intercepted him without incident and there are no injuries or other threat to the public at this time. Ok, lets unpack this a bit.
The first thing is holy moly, someone walked around with a rifle shooting at vehicles in the middle of the afternoon in small town America! What if people had been in those vehicles? Your family? Maybe this young man was having a mental episode of some kind, we don’t know what happened. But, people could very easily have been in those cars. Or walking in the parking lot and been a victim for no other reason than being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That young man is alive today because no one had a firearm and was close by. If I’d been there, and I shop there regularly, my gun would have been out of my holster while “evaluating what needs to happen here” if I was in the parking lot. If I’d been inside the store, I would have stayed there and made sure the managers locked every flipping door and access to that store. No one in or out! He had no right to yank out his rifle and just start shooting indiscriminately. And, I’m hoping he doesn’t see the light of day as a free man ever again.
How was the responding officer able to get compliance so quickly from this deranged young man? At the point of a gun or a bunch of pretty words and platitudes? I’m really hoping the dude had an ear full of muzzle from that officer.
There are no reported injuries but what about all that property damage? Who is going to pay for that? All of us in increased insurance rates!
But, this begs the question (several actually). What would you have done if you were there in that parking lot? Inside the store? With your family? Driving around the parking lot and saw him shooting? Would your gun be on you or at home? Would your gun be on you or in that parking lot in your vehicle?! Do you have the actual skills to respond to a situation like this? Not the desire, the ACTUAL SKILLS AND MINDSET? Do you?
If you don’t, let’s fix it. This is exactly what the Firearms Fellowship is designed around. Building your skills to a level of competency and mindset so that you can respond to any situation while out and about is our mission. We are the protectors of our family. If your skills are weak and/or rusty, it’s time to fix it. I really don’t see our societal situation getting any better. I predict we will see a lot more of these types of things from mentally ill people or terrorists acting out against salt of the earth law-abiding Americans. Are you ready to respond? Stay safe and keep training!
