What is your why?
What is the reason you decided to get a gun and learn more about it? To be a good protector of your family? To teach your wife/children? To be on your church security team? Self Defense is a priority? Because the world is a scary place right now? Because of a local event that jolted you? You want to know more gents that have this same interest? Because you’ve always been curious about guns and want to know more? Because you’d like to shoot a match?
Regardless of the reason you did that and joined Firearms Fellowship, I’d like you to take and moment and reconnect with your why. Your reason why is likely closely tied to your personal mission in life and this ties in with your goals. Yes, shooting is a very fun hobby! But, regardless of the reason, we should all have goals in all areas. Be remembering our reason why, it helps us stay committed to our path forward in the coming year.
My personal why is that I wanted to be able to shoot shots through the same exact hole whenever I wanted to. I can do that now and it gives me pride. But more importantly, it gives me confidence that should my skills be called upon to defend myself and others, that skill can be relied upon. The why (I want to shoot into the same hole upon demand) has many benefits. Its awesome on the range as a demonstration, LOL! But, skills degrade under pressure. It’s estimated that we shoot 70% of our worst day. I wanted my worst day to be really freaking good so that the degradation ensured all hits are delivered to the target, not off target where it’s still a hit out there somewhere… Yes, it makes for a helluva range demonstration, but it gets people’s attention too in a good way. It inspires them to want to be able to do that, or to be able to shoot that quickly and still get great hits. My why isn’t a lark, it represents a level that means the skill is reliable and hard baked in. It may look like a parlor trick but that “trick” has very deep roots of hours on the range and 1000s of rounds downrange over years. What’s your why? Focus on that and stay the course. Over time, your skills will improve so much that your current self won’t recognize your future self.
Stay safe and keep training!
