Shorter Days
Now that we’ve had our first cool air (yay to the end of the long hot days for a while), it’s time to start thinking about shorter days and the holiday season. This is always an exciting time of the year but our busier than normal schedules means something usually has to give. Is anyone else starting to think about Thanksgiving turkey, pecan pie, apple cider and all those fantastic holiday flavors?
Shorter days means it’s harder to get to an event or the range for regular practice. That doesn’t mean your skills have to suffer though. As a Group Guyde, I’m structuring our group events so that learning continues through the shorter days seasons. Our evening events will still happen but we will be inside working on mindset, technology solutions such as the MantisX, dry fire, holster clinics and guest speakers on a variety of helpful topics.
Shorter, cooler days means we also will be adjusting our wardrobe adding flannel shirts, vests, and jackets. This brings an extra challenge when conceal carrying. There’s simply a lot more to get through or move to get to our guns should that be necessary. We also have to be MUCH MORE CAREFUL when holstering our firearm to account for hoodie strings, jacket zippers or shirt tails. This is the perfect time to talk to your Group Guyde about a fall/winter holster clinic as the dynamics and movements will change with more outerwear.
How can you keep your skills sharp? Dry Fire is the answer! Do it for 10 minutes a day and you won’t believe the results. A great way to get in some time and reps is first thing in the morning when you get dressed and gear up. Unload the firearm and holster it under your shirt or jacket. Then do at least 10 reps coming out of the holster from concealment in the clothes you are wearing that day. Each day, your shirt or pants or belt may be a bit different. You will be prepared should you need to with that recent practice in what you are wearing. If you do this every day, that’s 3650 reps with your conceal set-up! All without having to schedule a separate dry-fire practice session. Not to mention, you will be dialed in on what you have to do with the exact clothes you are wearing on a daily basis.
Stay safe and keep on training!
